We Love Jungle presents: An interview with Virgo Don

We Love Jungle presents: An interview with Virgo Don

What does Jungle mean to you?

A spiritual movement. Notice it brings all colours, classes and creeds together. I’ve seen people totally transform when the bass hits them.

Where were you in the ‘golden’ age of Jungle?

I was just a supporter those days as I was doing mostly Dancehall Reggae then. A few of my friends were and still are involved in the scene. So I was around, but not in it.

Who are your influences, past and present?

My main influences were people like Papa San, Lt Stitchie and Professor Nuts. As for present, I get inspired and influenced every day. The scene is vibrant at the moment with some great talent. Even the nominees in the category of Best Breakthrough MC right now are testimony to that.

Has your approach to MCing changed since you first started out?

Kind of and not. I would say my approach has become more ‘adapted’ than changed. Back in the day proving myself played a part in my whole approach to MCing. Now my sole aim is to please the supporters, nothing else.

What’s your top Jungle tune at the moment?

Tenor Fly – Born Again. I dare you to listen to it once and not have it ringing around in your head for the rest of the day. You most probably even find yourself singing or humming the words too lol. Plus, it has a very powerful message.

What’s the most embarrassing thing you did at a gig?

My most embarrassing thing is forgetting and or not knowing people’s names. I regular have to make inconspicuous turns to friends asking “Who’s that again?”

If MCing wasn’t your job, what would it be?

I have spent so much time coming in and out of the music business trying to find myself that I think it is now conclusive. There is no other job for me.

Any new projects coming up?

Where do I start? Well the Nicky Blackmarket & Voltage remix of ‘Original Don’, Marvellous Cain & Dope Ammo remix of ‘Who Tell Dem’, Keith Rinse-it’s remix of ‘Ting About Girls’ plus original track ‘Blaze Fire’ are all ready for release. I also have other tracks with other producers which I am not sure I am allowed to mention just yet which, as we speak, are about to pop off.
