We Love Jungle presents: An interview with Ras Sterlin

What does Jungle mean to you?

Hard one to answer but I grew up in a London that was very divided after the New Cross and Brixton riots. My family had a soundsystem and that was a big influence on my musical taste but I was a London boy and house & hardcore were both early scenes I’d been into. Jungle just seemed like a marriage of everything I was into musically and culturally, so to me Jungle means just that, unity of everything within our music.

Where were you in the ‘golden’ age of Jungle?

Lol raving, earning money to rave and * cough * in Y.O.I as a consequence

Who are your influences, past and present?

Navi, Pressure X, Billy Bunter, Capleton, Bob Marley and everyday people, as in, just the incredible things I see people go through day to day and pull through.

Has your approach to MCing changed since you first started out?

Yeah deffo. It’s my last priority nowadays as running Asbo & Anti Social Records takes up a lot of time so I’d say I host and freestyle a lot now and just look to create a vibe with my DJ rather than just get on the mic and spit pre-prepared lyrics.

What’s your top Jungle tune at the moment?

Pass 🙂

What’s the most embarrassing thing you did at a gig?

I fell off the stage lol.

If MCing wasn’t your job, what would it be?

I’m yet to buy a house off it so it’s still a hobby and one I love, not really a job, but I love art and producing and pushing the whole Asbo Thing We Do.

Any new projects coming up?

Production wise a couple new E.P’s. Label Wise, more quality Jungle music. M.C Wise, Vienna On The 28th Of April which will be the first time I’ve had an out of U.K Booking 🙂
